Net ties and ring hooks
Following up on the club survey reports of dissatisfaction with the net ties and fixings, David Stantiall has kindly replaced the remaining two broken net tie ground fittings on courts 1 and 5 with new replacement rings secured into the ground. In addition, all of the central net ties have now been renewed with properly adjusted good quality straps, each secured with closed clips for fixing into the hooks on the courts. This will prevent the net ties from coming loose in winds, or if not properly adjusted. As the heights have been preset, there should be no need to adjust the nets for play – just wind the handle up until there is good tension on the net wire, and check that the height is correct with a measuring stick.
All of the flood light bulbs will be changed very soon. The order to a specialist flood lights contractor has been confirmed, and the job will be done imminently.
Working party – 19th November 2016
A great success and fortuitously done before storm Angus hit with high winds on the 21st!
Very grateful thanks to Mark Love for leaf blowing on Friday, and Kelly, Clive, and Val for crockery washing and kitchen cleaning on Friday evening,
Massive thanks to Saturday Working Party volunteers – early starters Dave W and Martin dealt with all the hedge trimming, whilst Sarah and John Davey refurbished the flower baskets with a winter season selection, Milly Sawyer for a very thorough clean throughout the club house (In case you wondered who cleaned the club house tea room, bar and toilets, it is David, Milly and Emma Sawyer that clean it every single week to keep it looking as it does for all of you to enjoy). Maggie and Carolyn provided superb dump chauffeur services, with Hector as chief leaf picker upper, aided by Carolyn between dump runs, and Martin when he finished the hedges. Chris Cooke did a special glasses clean in the bar, and Ivan cleared the disabled toilet. Michael organised the morning, cleaned out the club house gutters, strimmed behind the top building, fixed broken trellis, made the tea, and prepared the bacon sandwiches reward at the end, which everyone enjoyed. The club has to have sessions like this periodically to keep it looking good, and the committee are very grateful to everybody that gave up a few hours of their Saturday morning to make such a valuable contribution on everybody’s behalf.
Race Night – 19th November
A brilliant evening’s entertainment, set up and hosted by Ivan, was enjoyed by nearly twenty five adults and a dozen children. Eight horse races were cheered on, with a special children’s race, arranged by Ivan and organised by Clive on the night, taking place before the last race. Special thanks to Robbie (Glenmorangie whisky) and Chere (Beautiful ladies tennis bag) for donating prizes for the raffle – Carolyn Backway won the whisky, Colin Benson won the Prosecco, and Glenys Baker won the ladies tennis bag. Thanks to everyone’s generous support, £85 was raised from the raffle for the club. Further thanks to Ivan, who put in a lot of hard work on this event, Clive for running the bar, and Sandra V and the clean up team that left the bar looking good at the end. Thanks to their efforts, and the contribution of those attending on the night, an additional £187 was raised, and the bar was busy too! Purley Bury social evenings are great fun, look out for the next one and come along and join in the fun.
Monday and Thursday evening rotas, and club play
Please, please, please maximise your membership and enjoyment of tennis by signing up to our rota sessions! There are plenty to choose from.
Monday night rota (earlies) 7- 8.30pm – Chris Baker organises the Monday early session providing quality competitive and organised mixed, men’s, and ladies doubles for FULL and EDUCATION members. Please email Chris for details if you are interested in joining this session regularly, or as a reserve, by emailing him at email@example.com If you would like to meet the early Monday players and discuss the rota, the early Monday session players are having Christmas Nibbles after the tennis (even if it is raining!) on Monday, 19th December, at 8.30pm, so come along then and introduce yourself.
Monday night rota (lates) 8.30 – 10pm – Sara Crouch organises the Monday evening late session. This session welcomes FULL, RESTRICTED, EDUCATION and PARENT members that are returning to tennis, or are recently through one of the MDL coaching programmes, all will be made very welcome. If you are interested in joining in this session, please email Sara at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please come along and introduce yourself on Monday, 19th December, (after 8.30pm) if you are interested in joining in with that late session.
John Brotherhood organises both rota sessions on a Thursday evening, which also provide quality competitive and organised mixed, men’s and ladies doubles for FULL and EDUCATION members – earlies at 7- 8.30pm, and lates from 8.30 – 10pm. If you are interested in joining in either of the Thursday evening rota sessions, please email John at email@example.com. Janet and Chere’s traditional Thursday Evening Rota Christmas Party will take place for Thursday rota players and reserves on the last Thursday of this season on 15th December. Nibbles and hot snacks will kindly be provided by Janet and Chere to kick off the festive season of good cheer! If you would like to meet the Thursday rota players, and hear more about the sessions and which might suit you, please come down at 8.30pm and introduce yourself.
The floodlight contribution for all rota sessions is £2.25 per player (payable to the captain on the night).
There is a regular club session, open to all FULL and EDUCATION members, on a Sunday morning at 10 am. This is just a turn up, mix in, and play session for mixed play for all levels, and continues until the last four, or pair, finishes.
We are introducing a new club session time from 2 – 5pm on Saturdays, which is available to all FULL, RESTRICTED, EDUCATION and PARENT members, as well as JUNIOR members. Please arrange someone to play with, or come down and play with your children, and take advantage of the courts. As the session builds, there will be open play across a spread of players, and we will look to arrange more organised sessions as this becomes popular.
Please note that proper tennis shoes and attire must be worn at all times, and no toys, balls other than tennis balls, or bicycles are allowed on court. Please show your racket band to prove membership of the club to any member of the club requesting confirmation of your membership, in order to help us maintain the courts in good condition for the enjoyment of paid members. There are plenty of opportunities to play tennis as we approach Christmas. After the holiday season is past, there will be a number of players keen to get out in the fresh air and run off that Christmas fayre! look out for ‘bring a friend’ offers for January / February, and start preparing for a great programme of tennis at Purley Bury Tennis Club in 2017!
Great News – According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, playing tennis reduces your risk of death at any given age by almost 50%.
On that note, the Committee would like to wish Seasons Greetings to you all, have a great Christmas, and get out on court and stay young in the New Year.
