Tennismark+ accreditation for excellence from the LTA

EGM 2100hrs Monday 11 September in the Clubhouse

Don’t forget there will be an Extraordinary General Meeting at 2100hrs on Monday 11 September 2017 where proposals to change the status of Purley Bury Tennis Club from ‘unincorporated’ to ‘Charitable Incorporated Organisation’ (or CIO) will be considered.

It is very important that you attend this EGM and cast your vote to decide the future status of The Club – we need at least 20 adult playing members to attend to be quorate.

Visitor fees

It has come to light that some members are unaware that there is a visitor fee payable for family members or friends that you invite to play at Purley Bury courts, who are not paid up playing members of the club. The Club Rules (available to view on the PBTC website) allow three visits by a guest in any one season before they are expected to join, with the member responsible for paying any fees due. The current visitors fee is £3, and is payable on an ‘honesty’ basis at the bar, recording the name of the guest at the point of payment. One off or occasional visits by family and friends (or former members that have moved away) that would like to play, but have no wish to join as they may not live locally, still have to pay a visitors fee. If you are a Social member and wish to play up to three times with a family member or friend, a visitors fee is payable, or you may prefer to upgrade your Social membership to ‘Parent’ if you wish to play with your Junior / Full / Student / Restricted member child regularly (details can be found on the club website or by contacting Sarah Wilson at

Special thanks

We would like to thank those members that are helping to maintain the grounds without the need for organised working parties. A number of volunteers have cut hedges, weeded the front garden, and cut the grass on the banks of their own volition, and we are most grateful to you all. We are about to come to the dreaded falling leaf season, and there are already piles of leaves appearing on court. If you find yourself sitting out a session, or have a spare half hour, please help to keep the courts and the veranda clear by sweeping up and bagging leaves and twigs – black sacks are kept in the cupboard under the ball cupboard in the tea room. If all playing members help now and again, it will keep the courts playable for everyone. We do not have contractors to clear leaves from the courts – if you find them clean when you arrive to play, it is because a volunteer swept them up and bagged them before you! Please help spread the load to keep the courts clear. Thank you for your help and support with this seasonal task.

On October 15th the old style £1 ceases to be legal tender. From October 1st the bar at PBTC will not accept the old style coin or give it in change to customers. This is to give me ample time to cash in any

existing ones and not have the club stuck with them. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Pam’s Summer Quiz, Saturday 19th August

The Summer Quiz was a lively and very well attended event with 9 teams taking part, which is probably a record. The quiz kicked off in a rowdy, light-hearted fashion and remained that way throughout the evening.

Pam, our hostess, kept the questions flowing despite the chatter and any dissent was given short shrift. You know who you are!

In the end, it was won by a new team called ‘Them in the Corner!’  Well done to them in the corner, and also well done to Pam who spends many hours seeking out these questions, checking and double checking the answers to provide us with a great evenings entertainment.

Future events

If anyone has any ideas for a social gathering Ivan would be delighted to hear from you.
