Waitrose shoppers, we need your help!

If you shop at Waitrose, please note that once again from April 1st Purley Bury Tennis Club is one of the three Community Support token boxes available as a choice at the Sanderstead branch specifically for disabled coaching – please put your tokens in our box to help the club and our disabled members! Thank you.

Subscriptions for 2019/2020 are due to be paid by the 30th April. Renewal letters will be sent out shortly. The membership terms and conditions agreed at the AGM can be found on the Purley Bury website at and should be read.

This year all payments must be made by BACS. This is by far the cheapest and most efficient method for our club and ensures the maximum amount of your subscription is used for the direct benefit of your club. In the unlikely event that this is not possible for you, please contact Sarah Wilson at

Social members are now members of PBTC Social Limited and will have separate renewal letters. Payments must be made by BACS to the PBTC Social Limited bank account which is separate from the Purley Bury Tennis Club Charity account.

Wimbledon Ballot

Purley Bury have been allocated 16 pairs of Wimbledon Tickets. This is one less pair than last year related to less opted in British Tennis Members. These include 6 pairs for Centre Court, 7 pairs for Court  One and 3 pairs for Court Two – we have no finals tickets again this year.

We chose to use the LTA system to automatically assign tickets to the eligible British Tennis Members. Successful members will be informed by the LTA direct. If unable to use the tickets please decline promptly so tickets can be re-assigned to other Purley Bury members.

Allocations will go live by mid-April with the final date of acceptance being 24th May 2019.

Replacement of Floodlights

We are making progress with our preparations to replace the floodlights. We have appointed Lee West as our consultant and he will be drawing up the specification and obtaining quotes. Meanwhile Michael has made several applications for grants which is proving to be a very time-consuming process. Please support him whenever you can and respond to his requests for help. The future of our club depends on it.

Quiz Night

The Alley Staggerers were delighted to finally win Pam’s quiz on Saturday night.  Nicki England said: ‘We tied 2nd place in the last one, but finally got to hold the trophy aloft!  Pam does a great job on the quiz, but my favourite bits are when new people tell her she’s got the answer wrong, or ask for half a point!  It’s a fun social occasion and we are grateful to have lived long enough to acquire knowledge, but not long enough to have forgotten it!  Four of us live in Purley Bury Close and whilst we walk down the alley to the club, we usually stagger back up it, hence the team name.  We were delighted to donate our prize money back to the club, to be used for the Friday Disabled Players.  Thanks to Pam for organising and Clive and Nikolai for running the bar – we look forward to the next one.’ Here, here, and thank you to the Staggerers for their kind donation to a very good cause.

Working Party

A dozen willing volunteers turned out on Saturday 30 March to tidy the grounds of our tennis club. Hedges and grass areas were cut, flower beds weeded, gutters cleared and a full sweep and tidy of all pathways and the car park;  this culminated  in over twenty very large bags of garden debris. We were fortified by numerous cups of tea, cakes and a bacon butty. Thank you so much to all who came down to help. Our next working party will take place a week or two before Club finals day and the date will be announced in the newsletter.

Junior News

The winners of the Quorn Family Cup which was played on Saturday 23rd March were Nigel and Henry Rata. The R/Up were Karen and Olivia Calligeris. They will go on to represent Purley Bury at Surbiton this Summer.

Danny Sapsford from Bright Ideas For Tennis visited our club on Friday 29th March to see how the disability tennis sessions were going. He was impressed at the number of children down before the disability session and joined in with the disability session. Great to see him back at the club and he will be back on 21st June for BREAKPOINT!

Easter Egg hunt Friday 5th April – TENNIS from 5pm-6pm – EGG HUNT 6pm

Easter camps start from Monday 8th April for 9 days at the club so we hope to see as many of our juniors involved. Details at

Summer term Coaching starts back on Tuesday 23rd April.

Lastly, we say goodbye to Steph Todd from the coaching team as she leaves to pursue another career. Steph has been a great addition to the MDL team and has put on some amazing junior events at the club. She will be missed but will remain as a tennis member and maybe enjoy working on her own game now as opposed to helping others. She will be a cover coach at the weekends and I am sure you will see her around at the club. Thanks for all your effort over the years!
