LEASE CELEBRATION EVENT
What a joyous day we had on Sunday 2 June to celebrate our new lease which will run until 2040. Our ladies first team served up a fine display to start the day with a 3-1 win against Old College in Surrey League Division 5 and our U14’s concluded the tennis with a great tournament win 5-1 against The Wimbledon Club. Meanwhile, on a beautiful day, Sunday morning social tennis continued, followed by an adult junior competition, and a coaching session with Danielle which was enjoyed by all who participated. We were delighted to welcome players from the Croquet Club and a few of our neighbours for the Chairmans’s toast to the new lease in the middle of the day. No celebratory day at a British tennis club would be complete without a barbecue, tea and cake. And what cakes with had with strawberries, of course, and an amazing tennis scene – court 6 if you like, but not for long!
There are so many people to thank for such a great day, so here we go:
Thanks to the maintenance volunteer team – Dave Winton, Jesus and Martin – who did a fantastic job trimming the hedges and the grass before the Lease Celebration Event. Thanks to all the cake makers, bar volunteers, tournament organisers, helpers and supporters, tea and cake stand helpers and to Nicki England for great work on the cash raffle, which raised £56.50 for the club (and for the winner, Robbie Watt – a very deserving recipient!) Thanks to Sarah for the bunting, and Michael, Phillip Handley and Tom, for putting it up. A special big thank you to our celebrity chef at the barbecue, Colin Benson, who did a great job producing excellent burgers and sausage baps. Thanks to Mark for running the adult and junior event played with low compression balls which had 12 players involved, with some adults who were kids again! Massive thanks to Coach Danielle Hayter for running a most enjoyable group coaching session, which raised funds for our ‘Free coaching for the disabled’ programme, and for introducing her friend, Liv Harland, who traveled down from Leeds and sang some most amazing songs to finish the day. Finally, thanks to anybody not mentioned above – you’re too numerous to add, so sorry if you’ve not been mentioned by job or name… That’s an extraordinary array of volunteers, all of whom made the New Lease Celebration Day such an awesome event, thank you all!

BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
Your Board met on Tuesday 28 May. There were two main issues:
Firstly, the club is on the cusp of securing grant funding for a very substantial part of the cost of replacing the lights and the courts. We are in the process of applying for planning permission, and obtaining quotes for like for like replacement of the playing surface as a matter of urgency. We have received very little response from members to our consultation of 13 May 2019
Secondly, the Board will be working with members on a succession plan for the Board. You will recall that we have 5 Trustees and two vacancies for a Social Coordinator and a Maintenance Manager. Michael and Geoff plan to step down as Chair and Treasurer at the next AGM which will leave us with just 3 Board Members, which is simply not sustainable. The good news is that we have two or three members who have stepped up to take responsibility for specific activities, and more than 70 members have volunteered to help over the year. Now we need two or three more to take on roles. The club is in great shape so it is not an unduly onerous task unless not enough people step up. Feel free to talk to any of the Board about what is involved without obligation! We expect to call a meeting of those interested in July.
