Purley Bury Newsletter – December 2019

BUILDING ON SUCCESS – YOUR PURLEY BURY NEWSLETTER – DECEMBER 2019

Now we have our courts back with brilliant new floodlights it is the time to build on our success. It is vital that  some more members step up and help us run the Club. Michael Vaughan and Geoff Green will both be standing down after the next AGM in February, so there will be important gaps to fill on the management team as well, but if several people are willing to come forward it should be possible to match the time people can spare to the jobs, large and small, for which we need people to take responsibility. For instance is there an accountant out there that might be able to help the club after February next year? Please talk to any of us on the management team to see what would work for you – YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU.

PLEASE READ ON for details of future events, the opportunity to join the Thursday Night Bridge Club who meet in the Club House every week, our great Celebratory Event last Friday, Wimbledon Tickets, and a plea from our neighbours to park considerately and not to obstruct their driveways or parking spaces outside their houses when we park our cars in the vicinity of the club.

We play duplicate bridge in a relaxed but competitive environment. Visitors are always welcome to try out up to three free sessions and hopefully join the membership afterwards. We encourage both couples and singles to come and play.

The Bridge Club acknowledges the hard work that has been done by PBTC to extensively redecorate the Clubhouse as it offers an elegant and comfortable hall in which to play duplicate bridge”. Membership of the Bridge Club entitles you to social membership of the Purley Bury Tennis Club.

Parking(free):  on site for 6 cars plus in Brancaster Lane and Purley Bury Avenue.

Wimbledon Tickets

The club’s allocation of Wimbledon tickets is based on the number of club members who have registered as British Tennis Members (BTM) and who have opted in to the Wimbledon ballot system. The more opted in members the more tickets will be allocated – so even if you are not sure you will be able to go to the championships it will help the club if you opt in via the LTA website.

Celebratory Event Friday 29 November 2019

We had a fantastic night on Friday 29 November when The Worshipful the Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Humayun Kabir formally cut the ribbon to open our new courts and turn on the Floodlights and Danny Sapsford of The BrightIdeasForTennis Charity who presented a sports wheelchair which the Dan Maskell Trust had provided for the use of our wheelchair players. We were delighted to welcome British Federation Cup Player Anna Smith who lives locally and came along as well.

The Chairman, Michael Vaughan, gave a speech outlining the progress the Club had made over the past 5 years which was well received by the assembled throng and warmly applauded. Michael thanked Viridor Credits and a second funding partner (currently under news embargo) for their contribution of £88,790 towards the LED floodlighting and courts refurbishment project. £12,000 had been raised during the year for free disabled coaching, some of which would carry over to 2020 to keep the sessions going. Hethanked his fellow Charity Trustees, John Davey, Geoff Green, Mark Love and Sarah Wilson for their efforts individually, and their incredible support to him as the Chairman, to make the refurbishment happen. He  thanked the Directors of PBTC Social Ltd – Robbie Watt and Geoff Green – for the amazing contribution and effort that went into making a profit from the bar, all of which was donated to the Club Charity. He said special thanks went to major Management Team Contributor Alison Brown who, with Sarah, had so brilliantly organised the refurbishment of the bar, and finally the volunteer members – far too numerous to mention – that had helped them and the Club. Finally he thanked the long-suffering  partners of everybody involved in making the club work – their patience was most gratefully appreciated. In particular,  he gave special thanks his wife Sandra, who had put up with more than anybody could imagine. Michael concluded with a toast to “Purley Bury Tennis Club, its Trustees and members, and everyone in the local community who benefits from itwhich was heartily supported by everyone present.

There was tennis and other activities throughout the evening for all sections of the Club. The Juniors played as usual at 5pm, followed by the disabled section at 645pm where the new wheelchair was put through its paces. Finally there was a quick tournament for seniors at 745pm

Thank you to Alison who organised the event, and Mark for organising the tennis. Thank you also to the members who provided the food.

Car Parking

We have had a plea from our neighbours to park considerately and not to obstruct their driveways or parking spaces outside their houses when we park our cars in the vicinity of the club. There is plenty of space to park around the perimeter of our Club on the Club side of Purley Bury Avenue and Brancaster Lane so please park there whenever possible.
