Summer has arrived! – Your Purley Bury Newsletter – June 2020

We are delighted to report that the new courts have now been painted and look splendid. We need to allow several days for the paint to cure, but the courts should be available for play again on Thursday 4 June 2020.

PLEASE NOTE, we have been advised by our contractor not to use the courts when the temperature is 26C or above as this could damage the surface during the first year after they have been laid. So if we have a heatwave please do not use the courts.

The LTA is seeking advice from the Government on the restrictions that still apply to playing tennis, and we expect to be able to update our guidance before the courts reopen.

Quiz Night – Saturday 6th June 2020

There will be a quiz evening at 8.00pm on Zoom, hosted by Sarah Wilson and Nathan Ascott. Please note, some questions may be sent out in advance at 7.00pm.To make this manageable, numbers will be restricted – please email Sarah Wilson on sarahcrid@talktalk.net if you would like to take part, by 6.00pm on Friday. Log-in details will be sent separately.

VE Celebrations

Members enjoyed joining in VE day celebrations over the Bank Holiday weekend albeit from home. The Friday VE day Zoom call had 12 families checking in to raise a glass and socialise. The Saturday quiz, brilliantly hosted by Nathan, was well received with 19 players involved from a cross section of the club , Well done to Ethan Edney and his family for winning. Sunday saw 10 families take part in a scavenger hunt organised by the Love family . It was fiercely competitive and great fun with the Rowlands narrowly beating the Kennedys to be crowned champions. There were fantastic entries to the Bake Off – if only we could have shared out! We decided to have categories;

  • joint winners for cake entries were Kelly and Alison
  • joint winners for cupcakes were Nicky and Joanna
  • junior winner for a marvellous looking Pavlova – Ruby Edwards
